Preston Island - Walk and Soup Lunch

by Ann Macdonald

Culross & Torryburn Parish Church have organised a walk around Torry Bay Lagoons to Preston Island, on Monday, 7th June.

Derek Abbott of Fife Ranger Services, who provides education on the Torry Bay site, will guide the walk and this is an excellent chance to learn more of the area’s history.

Sir Robert Preston of Valleyfield House, mined coal on Preston Island to fire saltpans for the production of salt and the fires operated through the night and were said to have acted as a beacon to homecoming sailors.

The complex included three shafts, named the George, the Anne and the Eye, which was elliptical in shape. The ruins of the salt pans and the early 19th century mine complex, still exist and can be visited during this outing.

Walkers are invited to meet at 10am. at Woodhead Street Church, High Valleyfield and return there for a Soup Lunch, afterwards.

Please telephone church office on 01383 882213  or 01383 880284 to book a place and spaces are limited.

Tickets cost £4 for adults and £2.50 for accompanied children.
