Culross shocked by new year death of student Calum
6 JanuaryTributes have been paid after Culross was left shocked and saddened at the death of local student Calum Burt, who was killed after being hit by a frieght train.
Calum, 20, is believed to have been struck by the train at 10am on New Year's Day as it passed through the village. British Transport Police (BTP) are investigating, but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.
A BTP spokesman said: “BTP officers were called to the line close to Longannet Power Station on Sunday, January 1, following the report of a man being struck by a train.
“Paramedics also attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A full report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
Calum was a second-year natural sciences student at Churchill College, Cambridge, and was also a talented violinist.
Tributes were paid to Calum both on his Facebook page, and on Twitter, where friend Jodie Muirhead said: "Thoughts are with the friends and family of Calum Burt. What an inspiration and great example of our youth. You will be sadly missed. RIP xx"
